Let's talk logistics here:
I have been having an issue of late with people who treat their characters like precious babies. I mean obviously all of our characters are near and dear to us, they're part of us, we made them. But there comes a time when you need to be able to step up and stop being an overprotective mother.
Namely when you enter OCTs. When you enter an OCT you are essentially throwing your precious baby in to what is most generally a fighting competition. Depending on the story prize, these fights may get bloody. Hell they might even wind up with your character dying. Or at least, logically speaking you're character might die. If it were at all realistic, in a battle for dominance your character is going to get injured, beat up, cut, broken, possibly killed. There is no magic forcefield in life. There shouldn't be one in OCTs. Unless it is clearly written on your character sheet. That doesn't even get in to those characters with rage buttons. You know, the ones where they go in to a blind rage and attack everything without discretion.
Let me just paint that in real world likeness for you. If someone is attacking you, you would fight back. There is no rule saying that you can't maim your attacker. Or hell even kill them if your life is in that much danger. It's called self defense. Let's be honest here, if someone came running at me with a knife, I wouldn't just sit there and let them kill me because they (or some higher level being said) that I couldn't kill them. I'm gonna use those survival instincts and fight back, health of that other guy be damned. Shouldn't our characters be afforded the same right?
Beyond that, no one should treat an OCT as canon. No matter how good you are, you're not guaranteed that you're going to win. Especially the higher the number of entrants, anyone's personal chances of winning drops significantly. Entering it as part of your characters canon story is just stupidity. If you want to enter with a pre-existing character, at least do it as an Alternate Universe. That way, even if your character loses or dies a horrible death, you know that off in canon they can live a long happy life off in mamby pamby safety land.
"OCTs aren't about why, they're about why not! You ask: why are so many of our OCTs dangerous? I say: why not marry safe OCTs if you love 'em so much?" - a bad rip off of Cave Johnson
